ANNOUNCEMENT - 2009-11-24

The Hatheway Trust—April 28th Monument Committee, cordially invites the general public to attend the unveiling of the maquette (model) of the April 28th “Day of Mourning” monument that will be placed outside the W. Frank Hatheway Labour Exhibit Centre at Lily Lake. The Monument is being erected to honour all workers who have been killed or injured on the job.

The unveiling will take place at the W. Frank Hatheway Lily Lake Pavilion on Wednesday, October 21st at 12 noon.

The Monument Committee had held a competition among sculptors in the Atlantic Provinces to produce a monument that would pay tribute to the sacrifice workers have made, while also expressing a compassionate element and a commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace. The successful entry was a joint submission by two New Brunswick artists, Darren Byers and Fred Harrison.

Both artists will be in attendance and following the unveiling will be explaining the particulars of their sculpture. The Jury, who assisted the Committee in making the final selection, referred to the Byers/Harrison sculpture in these terms: “This is a provocative design that invites interaction, inspection and reflection.”

His Worship, Mayor Ivan Court will be in attendance.

Light refreshments will be served.
